In Europe, the term "comics" appeared quite recently. In the 1980s, publishers began to use the term "comics", first for more mature works that were not in the superhero genre, then to describe the superhero genre so that the term almost became synonymous with "superhero comic book", this genre being the predominant genre in the United States. Indeed, Disney comics or newspaper comics are rarely or never called "comics" despite being American. With the arrival of Japanese comics, called "manga", the trend of calling American genre comics "comics" has strengthened.
