Welcome to our selection of works by Gil Elvgren(1914-1980)
American painter and illustrator, he drew many advertising posters for brands such as
Coca-Cola, Ovomaltine or Brown & Bigelow from the
1930s to the 1960s. The latter company commissioned many Pin-up calendars from him. His
illustrations served as inspiration for many nose arts but also for other artists. His technique
consisted of photographing the model, then painting it with a slightly exaggerated hyperrealism in
terms of leg length, hair and bust. These paintings were then reproduced in thousands of copies. A
significant number of these original commercial paintings are stored in the Brown & Bigelow archives
in Saint-Paul, Minnesota. These works were most often made in oil on a 76x61 cm canvas. He is
nicknamed the "Norman Rockwell of Pin-ups".
