Armand Guillaumin (1841-1927)
![]() ![]() Armand Guillaumin was a French painter. He was one of the first and most faithful participants in the Impressionist group. His Creuse landscapes, particularly those around Crozant, are among his most prized works. Originally from Moulins, Armand Guillaumin settled in Paris at 16. In 1860, he joined the "Compagnie des Chemins de fer d'Orléans". He met Paul Cézanne at the Académie Suisse and participated in the Salon des refusés of 1863. In 1892 he won the National Lottery, which allowed him to be financially independent and focus on his painting. At the beginning of the 20th century, Armand Guillaumin oriented his work towards a tighter brushwork, a livelier, almost violent palette, which, from 1901, enthused the young Othon Friesz, who declared himself dazzled by the purples, ochres and violets. He often went to the Côte d'Azur in Agay where he created beautiful seascapes and mountain views, of the Esterel massif and the snow-capped Alps. Armand Guillaumin then retired to Creuse and his last works had a similar character which will not highlight this important painter in the history of pictorial art. |
