Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543)
![]() ![]() Hans Holbein the Younger is a painter and engraver. Son of the painter Hans Holbein the Elder (c. 1465 - 1524), he is the younger brother of the painter Ambrosius Holbein (c. 1493/94 - c. 1519), with whom he studied in his father's workshop. In 1515, his family settled in Basel, a center of humanism, where he became friends with Erasmus. From 1516 to 1526, working for the wealthy merchant bourgeoisie, he produced portraits, religious compositions, mural decorations, stained glass cartoons and engravings, and the Basel Museum of Art holds the most important collection in the world of works by the Holbein family. During this period, he made numerous trips, including to Lucerne in Switzerland and to Italy (Rome, Florence). Influenced by Matthias Grünewald but also by Leonardo da Vinci (whom he discovered on a trip to France), his style opened up to the new conceptions of the Italian Renaissance. |
