Welcome to our selection of works by Michel-Ange(1475-1564)
Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, known in French as Michel-Ange, was an Italian painter, sculptor, poet and architect of the Renaissance. The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, painted between 1508 and 1512, and the Last Judgment executed between 1536 and 1541 on the altar wall of this chapel, are universally considered masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance. While the artist's homosexuality is no longer a secret today and no longer poses a problem, it was not always the case. Just as the nudity of the bodies in the Last Judgment of the Sistine Chapel was chastely covered after the painter's death, so Michelangelo's sexuality was modestly veiled. His work had a considerable influence on his contemporaries, so much so that his "manner" of painting and sculpting was extensively adopted by representatives of what would be called Mannerism, which flourished in the Late Renaissance. Gaspard Becerra and Bastiano da Sangallo were his students.
