Raffaello Sanzio, better known as Raphael (Raffaello) is an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance. He is also called Raffaello Santi, Raffaello da Urbino, Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino. Raphael has long been considered the greatest painter who ever existed, and he is still considered the artist in whom painting found its complete expression. This myth of Raphael appeared during the artist's lifetime, and his premature death, abruptly ending an activity marked by precocity, gave it a singular scope. His art, made of measure, grace and harmony, profoundly influenced Western painting until the 19th century. Raphael's style is characterized by an almost equal use of drawing and color because, unlike many painters, he does not let one dominate the other: he is as precise in line as in the distribution of hues. Casanova said that "no painter has surpassed Raphael in the beauty of figures". Delacroix affirmed that the simple name of Raphael "recalls to mind all that is highest in painting". Similarly, Ingres devoted a true cult to Raphael, both in his style dominated by a graphic design close to the Renaissance master and by recurring tributes to his work.
