Welcome to our selection of works by Roy Lichtenstein(1923-1997)
Roy Fox Lichtenstein is one of the most important artists of the American Pop Art movement. His works are strongly inspired by
advertising and popular imagery of his time, as well as "comics" (comic strips). He uses the halftone dot
system, and is inspired by stereotypes and hygiene or food. He likes flatness, and a commercial
convention. His art is a decal of highly cataloged forms, his images are as if digested by
typography. Lichtenstein never really took himself seriously, he said: "I think my work is different
from comic strips, but I wouldn't call it a 'transformation'. Whatever it means, I don't think
it's important for art." When his first works were presented, many art critics challenged the
originality of his work. Lichtenstein replied "The more faithful my work is to the original, the
more critical and meaningful it is." He himself described his style as "as artificial as possible".
His most famous painting is perhaps "Whaam!",
inspired by a DC Comics comic, All-American Men of War.
