The painting of inanimate objects gathers detailed depictions of luscious fruits, floral arrangements, game, or everyday utensils. The Dutch artist Jan van Kessel distinguished himself in this discipline through microscopic precision in rendering flowers and insects.

Still life relies on rigorous arrangement and surface texture mastery. Painters played with virtuosity on glassware reflections, silverware luster, and water transparency.
