Vincent Willem van Gogh was a Dutch painter and draftsman. His work, full of naturalism, inspired by Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism, foreshadows Fauvism and Expressionism. Considered the most famous painter by the general public (according to a recent study), Van Gogh's artistic career was as short as it was intense. It was only from 1880, at the age of 27, that he began to paint. He would take his own life 10 years later. The paths that led him to communicate, through painting, his aspirations and certainties, his hopes and disappointments, his physical and mental sufferings, and even his daily reality, were anything but luminous. Little known in the 1890s, Van Gogh was only noticed by a small number of authors and painters in France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Denmark.
