Welcome to our selection of works by Diego Velázquez(1599-1660)
Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez, known as Diego Velázquez in French, is a
painter of the Spanish Golden Age. He is famous for his portraits of King Philip IV's court in a free,
almost sketchy manner with vivid and apparent brushstrokes. He is generally considered, along with
Francisco Goya and El Greco, one of the greatest artists in
Spanish history. His style, while remaining very personal, is resolutely part of the Baroque movement of this period. Of all the great masters of
painting of the Spanish Golden Age, Don Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velasquez is perhaps the least
truly known, although his reputation is universally recognized. One can only envy the Spanish
museums that jealously kept almost all the works of their favorite artist, leaving only crumbs to
others... given the masterpieces produced! The painting "Las Meninas", where he represented himself with the
royal family, is considered by many to be the most beautiful work ever created, testifying to
Velasquez's incomparable genius!
