A Street Scene in Cairo* by Jean-Léon Gérôme

This magnificent creation is fully part of the Orientalism movement, a highly influential French academic trend of the nineteenth century. The famous painter Gérôme Jean-Léon expresses through this picturesque scene his interest in daily life and busy markets of the Near East. The composition entitled “A Street Scene in Cairo” illustrates the bustle and diversity of characters in a traditional oriental bazaar. This work faithfully retraces the warm and contrasted atmosphere of an Egyptian public square.

At the center of the image, a rider dressed in a white tunic and a dark vest is mounted on a chestnut horse facing right. Around him, a crowd of merchants and onlookers dressed in colorful draperies bustle in a shaded passage under tall stone arches. On the right, a standing man wears a pleated white skirt and a turban, while a saddled donkey waits patiently near a flight of steps leading to an entrance. Two stray dogs are visible, one on the left searching the ground and the other lying in the foreground on the right. The bright sunlight penetrates through openings, intensely illuminating the sandy ground and creating deep shadows under the porticoes.

The technical virtuosity of the painter is expressed in the striking realism of the horse’s coat and the draperies of the clothes. His perfect mastery of oil painting gives this genre scene a classical clarity and a palpable texture. His genius for light sublimates every detail of the architecture.
