Achilles discovered by Ulysses and Diomedes by Pierre Paul Rubens

This splendid oil painting reveals Greek mythological cunning with dramatic intensity

Drawn from the heroic legends of Ancient Greece, this vast narrative fresco portrays Odysseus’s ruse to reveal the identity of the Achaean hero. The painter Pierre Paul Rubens deploys his full theatrical skill in “Achille découvert parmi les filles de Lycomède” to capture a warrior’s turn toward his tragic destiny. This creation illustrates Flemish Baroque art through the vivacity of gestures, the agitated arrangement of figures, and the splendor of draperies.:::::In the center of the composition, young Achilles, dressed in a scarlet red gown, abruptly grabs a sword, betraying his virile nature among the princesses. Around him, King Lycomedes’s daughters, dressed in sumptuous embroidered silk gowns, observe the scene with astonishment and admiration. A servant kneeling in the foreground searches through a basket filled with precious jewelry, necklaces, and golden caskets. On the right, Odysseus and his companion, recognizable by their dark garments and bushy beards, hold the hero’s arm with confidence. The architectural background consists of majestic columns and an archway opening onto an azure sky broken by wispy clouds. Raking light strikes the fiery red drapery and makes the goldsmith ornaments shimmer.:::::Pierre Paul Rubens displays extraordinary mastery in the diversity of facial expressions and the richness of materials. His virtuosic use of oil paint bestows striking dynamism as well as remarkable psychological truth upon this mythological episode.
