After the Bath (Degas)

This work, often titled “After the Bath”, is a striking study bathed in warm, intense light. Edgar Degas depicts a nude female figure, leaning forward over a piece of furniture, her body twisted in an intimate gesture. The composition is almost entirely dominated by shades of red, orange, and ocher, creating a suffocating and passionate atmosphere. The forms are sketched with great freedom, the outlines dissolving into the color. The light seems to emanate from the scene itself, dramatically sculpting the woman’s body. It is a radical example of Degas’s experimentation with color and form, where emotion and atmosphere take precedence over literal description.
