This magnificent detail of an allegorical composition of the Italian Renaissance is a creation of great dramatic force by the painter Sandro Botticelli. Designated under the title of “Allegory of Spring”, this pictorial passage illustrates a key episode of classical mythology taken up by Florentine humanist poetry. Through this figure in full upheaval, the artist explores the poetic transition between wild breath and floral metamorphosis.

A young nymph with an anxious face is depicted in bust, her shoulder bare, standing out against a dark, wooded background. Her large, wide-open eyes look up toward the sky with an expression of mixed surprise and fear. From her half-opened mouth escapes a garland of small dark flowers and green leaves that mingles with her long blonde hair. Her wavy hair blows backward, accentuating the effect of running and rapid movement of the character. Her right hand, slender and raised in the foreground, seems to sketch a gesture of defense or shock face to an invisible presence. The side light models the shapes of her body draped in a fine, transparent white fabric.

The craftsman demonstrates exceptional mastery in the drawing of the hands and the naturalistic representation of the various botanical species. His tempera technique gives the movement of the hair and the transparency of the garment a unique vaporous lightness. The realism of the expressions gives this scene a poignant tension.
