Anacreon3 a 4 - Cupid flees* by Jean-Léon Gérôme

The famous painter Gérôme Jean-Léon is inspired here by stories from classical mythology to compose his canvas entitled “Anacreon3 a 4 - Cupid flees”. Opposite him, young Cupid, a completely naked winged child holding his bow, joyfully enters through an open door. The little divine god is enveloped in a halo of golden light that illuminates the whole room. On the left, a fire crackles gently in a stone hearth, casting warm glows on the floor. The darkness of the background reinforces the intimacy and mystery of this heavenly visit.

The artist’s exceptional mastery of light is manifested in this subtle and poetic chiaroscuro. His refined technique makes it possible to contrast the realism of the man’s skin with the ethereal softness of the child’s body. This play of shadows and light testifies to an immense pictorial expertise.
