Arabs arguing by Jean-Léon Gérôme

This master copy restores the lively atmosphere of a discussion in front of a historic mosque

This painting of great refinement is part of the Orientalism trend, a French academic movement very popular in the nineteenth century. The famous artist Gérôme Jean-Léon shows here his taste for the representation of genre scenes of the Near East. The painting entitled “Arabs arguing” illustrates an animated discussion between merchants in front of the entrance of a historic mosque. This original composition highlights human exchanges and the architectural beauty of Egypt.

Under a high carved stone porch decorated with geometric Islamic patterns, three men dressed in traditional costumes converse with animation. The central character, dressed in a long white robe and a matching turban, holds a cane and faces his companions. To his right, a man wears a blue tunic and a green turban, while the third wears a red robe. On the left, a large camel harnessed with a red leather saddle lowers its head toward the paved floor. In the background, a sunny alley opens under the arch, revealing distant dwellings bathed in light. The play of light and shadow structures the space with intensity.

The artist’s exceptional mastery of oil painting is revealed in the meticulous rendering of the textiles and the animal’s coat. His talent for restoring the texture of ancient stone gives a realistic dimension to this work. His sense of narrative captivates the viewer.
