At the Café-Concert des Ambassadeurs (Degas)

This work captures the energy of a Parisian café-concert. Through an architectural structure that fragments the view, Degas shows us a singer on stage, dressed in a bright orange dress, capturing all the light. Below, in the shadows, we can make out female spectators. The artist plays with striking contrasts: the darkness of the foreground and the harsh light of the stage, precise shapes and more blurred areas. The composition is innovative, almost cinematic, giving the impression of a stolen glance at the scene. Degas uses pastel to create effects of artificial light and a vibrant nocturnal atmosphere. It is a depiction of modern Parisian life, full of movement and sensations, a theme dear to the artist. The original is housed at the Musée d’Orsay.
