At the Milliner’s 2 (Degas)

This bold composition places us right up close to the scene. A milliner, in long gloves, adjusts a hat on the head of a seated customer, of whom we only see the back. The customer is absorbed in her reflection, while the artisan concentrates on her work. The sofa on which they are seated has a colorful diamond pattern that adds a touch of modernity and dynamism to the scene. Degas uses unusual viewing angles to create a sense of immersion and spontaneity. The color palette is rich and harmonious, blending browns, greens, and ochres. This work is a fascinating testimony to women’s work and social interactions in 19th-century Paris. The original is housed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
