Basket of Fruit by Caravaggio

A groundbreaking milestone in Western art history, “Basket of Fruit” by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio permanently elevated the still life into an autonomous and noble genre. Rendered with profound sincerity, this composition heralded the dawn of Baroque realism through its meticulous observation of the tangible world.

The woven wicker basket brimful of diverse fruits perches delicately over the front edge of a wooden table. It features split ripe figs, an insect-bitten apple, plump pears, and heavy bunches of white and purple grapes with powdery skins. Lush vine leaves intermingle with withered foliage, all set against a flat, radiant parchment-colored background that magnifies the tangible depth and volume of the harvest.

Caravaggio’s unmatched talent lies in his complete rejection of idealization, embracing natural blemishes and the quiet passage of time. His virtuoso oil glazing captures the rough textures, radiant reflections, and delicate moisture of plant life with photographic precision.
