Bathsheba by Jean-Léon Gérôme

The French academic production of the nineteenth century finds a striking illustration in this magnificent representation of Orientalism. To compose this work of great sensitivity, the painter Gérôme Jean-Léon draws free inspiration from a traditional biblical story. The painting entitled “Bathsheba” places this scene of intimacy above a vast Oriental city enveloped in mist. This ambitious creation succeeds in combining the exoticism of distant landscapes with the solemnity of great classical texts.

On a high terrace overlooking an immense city veiled by morning mist, a young woman entirely naked stands from behind. Her fair and luminous skin contrasts sharply with the dark silhouette of a maid crouching by her side. The latter calmly prepares ointments and perfumes in a sparkling copper basin. A delicate white and light drapery is placed on a low seat to the right of the carpet. On the far left, on a raised wooden balcony, a man discreetly observes her from his distant palace. The soft golden light of the rising sun envelops the entire scene in an intimate atmosphere.

The painter’s exceptional technique is fully expressed in the velvety rendering of the skin and the subtlety of the horizon’s gradients. His perfect mastery of oil painting allows him to contrast the realism of the stone with the poetry of the sky. This masterpiece testifies to an immense craftsmanship.
