Before the Race (Degas)

This work is a symphony of color and light. Degas shows us a group of jockeys on their horses in a green field, just before a race. Sunlight filters through the trees, creating patches of light on the grass and on the riders’ colorful silks. The atmosphere is relaxed, almost pastoral. The horses are depicted in various postures, some still, others slightly restless. Degas uses pastel with dazzling virtuosity, layering colors to achieve effects of texture and vibration. The bright green of the grass, the oranges and yellows of the silks, and the blue of the sky form a joyful and harmonious palette. It is a celebration of color, movement, and the beauty of a day outdoors.
