Betrothal of the Virgin by El Greco

This scene of great ritual dignity bears witness to El Greco’s ability to structure balanced and theatrical group compositions. Through this representation of a sacred union, the painter breathes an almost timeless solemnity into a key event of biblical history under the title of “Betrothal of the Virgin”. The alignment of the figures and the treatment of perspectives create a sacred space conducive to contemplation.

A majestic high priest, wearing a pointed white mitre and endowed with a long gray beard, stands at the exact center of the painting to unite the spouses. To his left, the Virgin Mary is wrapped from head to toe in a wide sky-blue cloak with satin reflections. To the priest’s right, Saint Joseph, dressed in a green tunic and a large golden yellow cloak, extends his hand towards that of his wife. Several male and female witnesses attend the ceremony in the background, their grave faces standing out against vertical gray draperies. The floor is composed of a geometric pavement of tiles alternating black and white, reinforcing the spatial depth.

The artist’s know-how bursts forth in the richness of the draperies and the subtle modulation of primary colors that catch the eye. His technique of layering pictorial coats gives an incomparable physical presence and silky texture to the clothes. It is a masterly demonstration of rigor and elegance.
