Big Ben - London by André Derain

During his milestone stay in the British capital, Derain André reinvented London iconography with his emblematic painting titled “Big Ben - London”. This major work is part of his famous Thames series, where he applied the principles of Fauvism to transfigure the city’s historic monuments. The artist broke away from London’s usual grayness to offer a nocturnal vision of unprecedented vitality and chromatic richness.

The majestic silhouette of Big Ben and the Palace of Westminster rises in the center of the composition, painted in tones of purplish blue and ultramarine. On the left, a brilliant orange-yellow solar or lunar disc scatters rays of light in the form of pointillist blue, purple, and red strokes across the sky. A boat with a green and yellow sail navigates the waters of the Thames, which shimmer with golden and green reflections. On the right, the illuminated arches of Westminster Bridge add a horizontal structure to this fairy-tale urban landscape, bathed in a dreamlike atmosphere.
