Black Root (Léger)

“Black Root” is a powerful abstract work by Fernand Léger. This painting features a large black biomorphic form that dominates the canvas, evoking a root or a growing organic entity. This massive shape is set against a textured background of deep red, almost brown, creating a dramatic and earthy contrast. Inside and around the black form, Léger places smaller, beige or light ochre shapes that seem to float or be openings revealing an underlying layer. The interplay between the positive form (the root) and the negative spaces (the cutouts) is central to the composition. The work moves away from mechanical Cubism to explore more organic and primitive forms.
