Boats at Collioure (Derain)

In this version of “Boats at Collioure”, André Derain explores the Divisionist technique, akin to Pointillism. The water’s surface is not a solid sheet but a vibrant mosaic of small dabs of pure color, primarily an intense blue juxtaposed with touches of red and orange. This fragmentation of the brushstroke creates an exceptional effect of shimmering and light. The forms of the boats and figures are simplified, almost schematic, giving precedence to the optical effect of the color. It is a work that shows the influence of Paul Signac on Derain and his ability to appropriate different techniques to serve his vision of a painting based on color and light.
