Boats in the Port of Collioure (Derain)

This work is a pure celebration of Fauvism. Painted during the summer of 1905 in Collioure, it captures the vibrancy of the harbor with an explosive color palette. Derain abandons any pretense of reality to express the intensity of the Mediterranean light. The water, the boats, and the village in the background are translated into large, flat areas of pure color and energetic brushstrokes.
