Boats in the Port of Collioure by André Derain

Inspired by the brilliant light of the South, Derain André composed a work of exceptional dramatic and colorful intensity titled “Boats in the Port of Collioure”. This milestone work of the Fauve movement expresses a total break with traditional perspective in favor of a flat, dynamic organization of space. Through this animated view of a port, the artist transcribed a pure thermal and visual sensation, where color directly echoes the summer heat.

The beach in the foreground is represented by a band of brilliant vermilion red, upon which rest several stylized boats shaped like yellow, blue, and green crescents. On the right side, a figure dressed in a bright green suit stands facing the sea, while another, nude and tinted yellow, is seated on the sand. The water of the bay is rendered by wide horizontal strokes of jade green and turquoise, dotted with small red and blue sailboats on the horizon. Hills with pink and purple outlines close the landscape under an almost blinding golden-yellow sky.

The artist’s artisan craftsmanship shines in the use of violent contrasts between warm and cool tones without subtle transitions. This bold technique of pure flat color and the simplification of forms reveal an extraordinary mastery of the suggestive power of paint, redefining the art of the modern landscape.
