Bottle, Newspaper and Fruit Bowl by Juan Gris

Born from the period of effervescence of synthetic cubism, this painting asserts itself as a remarkable demonstration of visual deconstruction. The fruit of the creativity of the Spanish master Juan Gris, the work entitled “Bottle, Newspaper and Fruit Bowl” rigorously explores the relations between the real object and its flat transcription. The painter chooses familiar bistro elements to structure his formal and conceptual research. Through this work, he radically redefines the conventions of the Western still life.

The scene is dominated by a slender green wine bottle, whose label bears the cursive inscription “Beau”. This bottle is placed on an inclined table with ochre, yellow and grey shades, contrasting sharply with a theatrical black background. Nearby, an unfolded newspaper proudly displays the title “LE JOURNAL” in highly graphic black capital letters. We also see a large bowl or a transparent cup which overlaps with the guiding lines of the bottle. Oblique lines strongly dynamicize the structure, while the white light cuts the volumes into sharp facets. The whole exudes a geometric rigor and a striking visual dynamism.

The technique used here bears witness to an exceptional expertise in the handling of cast shadows and the integration of realistic textual elements. The artist succeeds in combining the rigor of oil painting with the fluidity of charcoal drawing. This technical skill gives the scene a singular textural depth.
