Bridge (Léger)

“Bridge” (Le Pont) is a work from Fernand Léger’s early Cubist period. It shows the influence of Cézanne and the Analytic Cubism of Braque and Picasso. The subject, a bridge and its surroundings, is broken down into a multitude of geometric facets and planes. Léger, however, distinguishes himself with a preference for cylindrical and tubular forms, foreshadowing his “Tubist” style. The color palette is deliberately restricted, dominated by muted tones of gray, green, and beige, typical of this phase of Cubism where form takes precedence over color. The space is fragmented, with the foreground and background merging, creating a dense and structured composition. It is a key work for understanding Léger’s transition towards his own vision of modernity.
