Cheyenne Scout by Henry F. Farny

A hand painted reproduction that magnifies the solemn presence of a plains chief

This splendid equestrian composition, titled “Cheyenne Scout”, illustrates Henry Farny’s incontestable mastery in the art of Western realism. Specializing in the daily scenes of native peoples, the painter here represents a solitary rider crossing an arid plain. The work bears witness to a deep understanding of the symbiosis between the Native American rider and his mount, a fundamental pillar of plains culture.

A Native American warrior proudly rides a superb white horse standing motionless on a sandy and parched ground. The rider, dressed in a light yellow shirt and wearing a raptor feather in his black hair, holds his rifle horizontally in front of him. The beating sun, nearly at its zenith, casts a dark and very sharp shadow of the mount and its rider on the light ground of the foreground. The arid prairie stretches toward the background, dotted with small dry bushes, under a very pure blue sky. In the distance, low, ochre mountain ridges cross the horizon line in a hazy end-of-day atmosphere.

Henry Farny’s skill is manifested in the anatomical accuracy of the white horse and the subtle play of light on its pale coat. The dramatic strength of the shadow cast on the ground demonstrates a sharp sense of contrast and a highly precise pictorial technique, worthy of a great master.
