Christ in the house of Martha and Mary* by Johannes Vermeer

Inscribed early in the seventeenth-century Dutch master’s career, this vast religious scene illustrates a striking Gospel episode. Entitled “Christ in the house of Martha and Mary”, this large painting created by Jan Vermeer depicts Christ’s reception in the home of the two sisters of Bethany. The artist combines the solemnity of Dutch sacred art with the benevolent intimacy of a rustic domestic interior.

To the right of the composition, Christ dressed in a dark gown and draped in a night-blue mantle sits in a wooden armchair, extending his right arm to bestow his teaching. At his feet, Mary sits humbly on the floor, dressed in a bright red bodice and a green skirt, listening to his words with fervent attention. Behind a white-draped table, Martha leans toward Jesus while holding a wicker basket filled with a round loaf of bread. Soft light coming from the left illuminates the figures’ faces and warms the garment tones. An Oriental rug with a red pattern is draped over the left chair.

Jan Vermeer demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship in composing color masses and the fluidity of draperies. His early mastery of oil painting gives the figures and objects a physical presence imbued with serenity and realism.
