Christopher Columbus and His Son by Eugène Delacroix

This historical scene of great classical sobriety bears witness to the constant interest of French Romanticism in historical and monastic subjects. Through this narrative composition entitled “Christopher Columbus and His Son at La Rábida”, the painter of genius Eugène Delacroix wishes to depict a solemn meeting in the heart of a Spanish monastery of great austerity. The artist succeeds here in establishing an atmosphere of listening and waiting, where individual destinies seem to be sealed under the gaze of the Church.

In a long monastery corridor with whitened walls and topped by large arches, several monks dressed in white robes and black cowls stand. In the center, two monks listen attentively to a standing man dressed in a Spanish Renaissance costume with a brown jacket and yellow stockings. The latter points with his gaze to his companion, a young man wearing a red cap, lying down and exhausted on a wooden bench on the right. On the floor lies a heavy dark fur coat near a traveler’s cane resting against the bench. The gallery walls are adorned with large framed paintings and a large geographical map, while on the left, other monks converse in the gloom.

The rigor of the perspective and the subtle arrangement of the characters reveal a perfect mastery of composition and historical narration. Through his delicate oil painting technique, the painter admirably restores the solemn calm of the place and the variety of human expressions.
