This work is a study or preliminary version of the large painting “The City of Paris.” We find the same elements here: the Three Graces in the center, a bridge and a boat on the left, and the Eiffel Tower on the right. However, the treatment is more analytical and closer to Cubism. The color palette is much more restricted, dominated by tones of gray, blue, and ochre, which emphasizes the structure and fragmentation of forms. The figures and the landscape are broken down into a multitude of geometric facets. It is a work that allows us to understand Delaunay’s creative process, moving from a Cubist analysis of form to the colorful synthesis of Orphism that he would achieve in the final version.
