Country Landscape (Léger)
“Country Landscape” is a work from Fernand Léger’s early Cubist phase. It shows the rural landscape deconstructed into a series of geometric planes and facets. Influenced by Cézanne, Léger simplifies the houses, trees, and hills into cylindrical and cubic forms. The color palette is subdued, dominated by greens, grays, and beiges, typical of Analytical Cubism. However, Léger already introduces touches of brighter colors, like the red and blue of the poles in the foreground, heralding his future abandonment of monochromy. The space is dense, with no traditional perspective, as the foreground and background interpenetrate. It is a rigorous study of volume and structure.
