Dancer Leaving her Dressing Room (Degas)

This work captures a fleeting and intimate moment backstage at the opera. A young dancer, dressed in a spectacular turquoise green tutu, emerges from her dressing room. The vertical and narrow framing enhances the impression of a corridor and confined space. The light seems to come from the off-screen stage, casting shadows and illuminating the ballerina’s costume. Degas uses pastel with great virtuosity to render the volume and texture of the tutu, as well as the vibrant colors of the decor, particularly the red and purple stripes on the floor. The dancer’s face is lowered, suggesting concentration or perhaps fatigue before going on stage. It is a snapshot full of life, revealing Degas’s fascination with the hidden world of ballet.
