Dancer with a Bouquet of Flowers 2 (Degas)

This famous composition from the Musée d’Orsay puts us in the shoes of a spectator. In the foreground, the back of a woman and her black fan occupy a large part of the space. Beyond, on stage, a dancer in a white tutu and colorful bodice bows to the audience, a bouquet at her feet. The corps de ballet in blue and yellow tutus is visible in the background. This bold framing, which includes a visual obstacle in the foreground, is a trademark of Degas, inspired by photography. It creates a sense of immersion and realism, as if we were actually sitting in the box next to this woman.
