Dancers in Orange (Degas)

This work is an explosion of orange color. Three dancers, dressed in vibrant orange tutus, are captured in full motion. Their bodies blend in a dynamic and rhythmic composition. The background, treated with touches of green and blue, further enhances the warmth of the orange. Degas uses pastel in an expressive and energetic way, with visible hatching that brings the scene to life. He is not interested in the dancers’ identities, but in the mass of color and group movement. The light seems to sculpt the tutus, creating areas of shadow and light that accentuate volume and texture. It is an almost abstract work in its treatment, where color and rhythm take precedence over the subject. The original is housed at the Musée d’Orsay.
