Danger by Henry F. Farny

This artisanal painting expresses the cultural shock during a nocturnal ritual dance

This powerful vertical composition highlights the heroic figure of the indigenous warrior confronting the harshness of great wild landscapes. The painting entitled “Danger”, painted by the accomplished artist Henry Farny, belongs to the nineteenth-century American natural realism movement. Through this vigorous scene, the author strives to depict the symbiotic harmony and courage of free peoples facing a steep and hostile mountainous environment.

A brave and shirtless Native American warrior rides a superb black mount descending a very steep and sandy mountain slope. The man, wearing a bright red headband in his long black hair, firmly holds his rifle in his right hand while staring at the viewer with an intense and fearless gaze. A heavy ammunition bandolier is wrapped around his bare chest and a white animal hide is securely buckled under his leather saddle. The rocky and dusty ground is dotted with small dry bushes. In the background, a majestic mountain with steep cliffs and flat peaks rises under a bright azure sky, reinforcing the verticality of the work.

The creator demonstrates an incomparable technique in the representation of the black horse and its shiny coat. His mastery of the descending perspective creates a remarkable sensation of movement and dramatic tension. The rendering of the rocks and the desert dust testifies to a great academic realism.
