Dawn at Isawa in Kai Province by Katsushika Hokusai

This superb ukiyo-e print belongs to the golden age of Japanese woodblock printing from the Edo period. The famous master of Japanese landscape art offers here a lively morning stop in a traditional post station. The artwork titled “Dawn at Isawa in Kai Province” is signed by the great artist Hokusai Katsushika, who knows how to connect daily human activity to the natural and eternal majesty of Mount Fuji with infinite poetry.

In the foreground, charming thatched-roof cottages with warm orange and brown roofs crowd together, sheltering travelers busy at the break of day. Several figures dressed in indigo kimonos and wearing conical straw hats guide heavily laden horses along the winding path. In the middle ground, a thick band of white and vaporous mist horizontally crosses the scene, isolating the village from the background. Above this mystical mist rises the dark and majestic silhouette of Mount Fuji, whose sharp peak is capped with pristine white snow. The sky is adorned with a horizontal gradient of bright orange and pale yellow evoking dawn, rising toward a soft blue.

The artist demonstrates here his incredible expertise in using atmospheric perspective and chromatic contrasts.
