Diana and Apollo Piercing Niobe’s Children with their Arrows by Jacques-Louis David

This dramatic work by Jacques-Louis David illustrates the terrible myth of Niobe. Queen of Thebes, she had boasted of having more children than the goddess Leto, mother of Apollo and Diana. To avenge their mother, the two deities massacre all of Niobe’s children with their arrows. David captures the climax of the tragedy. The composition is a whirlwind of moving bodies, frightened horses, and floating draperies, in a style that already heralds Romanticism. In the center, a helpless Niobe raises her arms to the sky in a gesture of defiance and despair. Around her, her children collapse in pathetic postures. In the sky, Apollo and Diana appear as implacable divine executioners. It is a scene of rare violence and expressive power, where David demonstrates his talent for orchestrating complex and emotionally charged compositions.
