Dinner by Franz von Stuck

In the artistic production of fin-de-siècle Europe, Franz von Stuck occupied a unique place as a painter, sculptor, and architect of his own villa. It is this taste for theatricality and sacred space that we find in the sumptuous artwork titled “Dinner”, which represents a solemn reception. This painting illustrates the bourgeois art of living mixed with an antique inspiration highly present in the interior decoration.

The scene takes place inside a vast, sumptuously decorated banquet hall, whose blue and gold coffered ceiling structures the space with rigor. In the background, a wall fresco with classical motifs in pastel blue tones is displayed on the partition. A long horizontal table gathers numerous guests in formal evening attire, of whom some profiles are clearly outlined. The table is brilliantly illuminated by a series of gilded candelabras whose flames diffuse a warm, yellow light throughout the room. In the foreground, large, dark, almost spectral silhouettes stand on the sides, adding depth and a certain mystery to this highly solemn composition.

Franz von Stuck proves here his masterly handling of artificial light and contrast of values. His exceptional skill in juxtaposing the mysterious silhouettes in the foreground with the glowing brightness of the honor table demonstrates incomparable technical virtuosity.
