Diptych Dawn and Dusk by Alfons Mucha

This magnificent horizontal diptych explores the pivotal moments of natural light through two compositions of timeless sensuality and poetry. Produced by the master of the poster Alphonse Mucha, this double work entitled “Diptych Dawn and Dusk” opposes the freshness of the morning to the softness of the evening. The fluid and harmonious graphics fit into the heart of Art Nouveau, using the curves of the female body to express the transitions of celestial time.

The two superimposed panels present languid female figures in twilight sylvan settings. The upper panel shows a semi-reclining red-haired woman, clutching a pink drape against her chest in an undergrowth with violet and purple hues under a rising sky. The lower panel reveals a completely nude silhouette, lying in profile on bluish linens and looking towards the left of the composition. Behind her, a large orange sun sets on the horizon, cutting out the shadows of a landscape of stylized trees. The silky drapes delicately envelop the reclining silhouettes, creating a protective cocoon effect in the middle of the forest bathed in warm lights.

An exceptional technical skill can be detected in the treatment of soft luminous transitions and the fineness of the anatomical drawing.
