Enemies all around by Franz von Stuck

This dramatic and heroic composition belongs to the movement of German Symbolism and academic art of the late nineteenth century. At the base of the painting, the Latin or Germanic inscription stands out discreetly on the lighter ground. The raw light illuminates the hero’s vigorous body, accentuating his powerful musculature against the surrounding shadow.

The artist demonstrates remarkable pictorial mastery in the vigor of his stroke and the rough work of the chromatic material. The almost sculptural texture of the oil paint reinforces the physical intensity of this mythic combat.
