Entry of Emperor Charles IV into Cambrai by Jean Fouquet

A superb exceptional master copy expressing allegiance relationships with nobility

This superb historical illumination illustrates an official meeting of high dignity under the ramparts of a medieval fortress. Entitled “Entry of Emperor Charles IV into Cambrai”, this exceptional miniature is painted by the famous artist Jean Fouquet, official painter to the French court, who revolutionized the pictorial art of his time. Through this equestrian gathering, the creator noblely expresses the relations of allegiance and respect between the great figures of the kingdom.

In the foreground, a venerable old man with a long white beard, wearing a brown hat and dressed in a golden cloak trimmed with dark fur, rides a proud white horse at a trot. To his left, a crowned monarch draped in a scarlet cape follows him closely on his bay horse. On the right side, horsemen respectfully salute by taking off their colorful hats, one red and the other saffron yellow. In the background, the powerful grey stone ramparts of a fortified castle stand out clearly under a pure and cloudless blue sky. The direct light highlights the concentrated and respectful expressions of each character.

Jean Fouquet demonstrates exceptional mastery in the anatomical drawing of horses and the precise rendering of precious fabrics. His science of light and his touch of incomparable finesse elevate this miniature to the rank of a masterpiece of Renaissance art.
