Eye in Eye by Edvard Munch

This intimate creation is part of the symbolist research on mutual misunderstanding and the insurmountable distance between human beings within the couple. The painter orchestrates this silent encounter in a refined natural setting, guided by the psychological sensitivity specific to the work of Edvard Munch. This subtle work, which is entitled “Eye in Eye”, depicts the melancholy of a broken dialogue under the protective but heavy shadow of a century-old tree.

In the foreground, two expressive profiles face each other on either side of the vertical trunk of a robust tree that divides the composition into two distinct sections. On the left, a woman with long wavy red hair looks forward, her mysterious silhouette almost merging into the gloom of the dense vegetation. On the right, a man with a yellowish pale face, dressed in a black coat with a stiff white collar, observes her in silence with an expression of deep sadness. In the background, beyond a large field of a dark and uniform green, a small red house with illuminated white windows stands out clearly under a very pale blue sky.

The technical virtuosity is expressed through the use of simplified shapes and a restricted but highly symbolic chromatic palette. The artist demonstrates a superb craft in the treatment of smooth faces and textured hair, materializing inner isolation with great finesse.
