Glass and Newspaper by Juan Gris

This splendid painting of synthetic cubism, produced by the avant-garde painter Juan Gris, demonstrates an admirable geometric rigor. In this work entitled “Glass and Newspaper”, the artist subtly deconstructs everyday objects to propose a novel formal interpretation. Through a complex network of straight and curved lines, the painter manages to harmonize abstraction with the subject represented. This creation perfectly illustrates the excellence of his art.

The still life is organized on a tilted ochre table that structures the lower space of the composition. In the left foreground, a piece of white newspaper shows the letters printed in black “LE”, while another piece on the right displays the letters “AL”, evoking the famous daily. Between these elements rests a rectangular area of bright yellow color, on which is superimposed a curved bluish-grey shape simulating a pipe or a musical instrument. Oblique grey, brown, blue, and black planes intersect in the background to close the perspective in a harmonious way. The light, diffuse and enveloping, softens the edges of the geometric shapes.

The pictorial technique bears witness to an exceptional craftsmanship through the subtlety of the chromatic gradients and the purity of the lines. Through an exemplary mastery of oil painting, Gris succeeds in giving a unique material consistency to the superimposed color planes.
