Homage of Edward I to Philip the Fair by Jean Fouquet

This custom painting celebrates political sovereignty under the aegis of the monarchy

This sumptuous interior illumination introduces us to the sacred intimacy of power at the French court. Entitled “Homage of Edward I to Philip the Fair”, this remarkable painting is the work of the great Jean Fouquet, who here immortalizes an act of royal allegiance with incomparable solemnity. Through this rigorous staging, the painter celebrates political sovereignty under the aegis of the symbols of the French monarchy.

The scene takes place in an audience hall entirely draped in rich fabrics of a royal blue sown with golden fleurs-de-lis. On the left, a crowned monarch wearing a matching azure cloak is seated on his throne, holding a long sceptre and consulting a large open book. In front of him, a kneeling prince in a scarlet red robe embroidered with golden lions listens respectfully. Behind them, a tight assembly of counselors and courtiers in red and black caps watches the scene with gravity. A stone mullioned window opens in the background onto a distant landscape, letting in a soft light that models the faces realistically.

Jean Fouquet here demonstrates all his virtuosity in the rigorous organization of space and the tactile rendering of precious fabrics. His science of linear perspective and his treatment of applied gold make this miniature a monument of Valois Renaissance art.
