Hunting Dogs with Dead Hare by Gustave Courbet

A master copy of a hunting scene that captures the intensity of wildlife

This hunting scene forcefully expresses one of the major themes of the painter’s work, deeply rooted in the traditions of his native Franche-Comté. Through this dramatic composition entitled “Hunting Dogs with Dead Hare”, the artist Gustave Courbet delivers a striking and uncompromising representation of the end of a chase. This painting beautifully illustrates the Realist movement, striving to paint the raw energy of animals and the physical reality of death without pretense or sentimentalism, breaking with the idealistic codes of the time.

In a shaded clearing at the edge of a forest, two large two-tone hunting dogs, white and brown, are represented in full action. The first dog, in the center, leans toward the ground, body tense and tail raised, intensely staring at the game. To its right, the second dog, spotted with black and white, approaches with the same attitude of contained predation. On the left, a dead hare lies on its back in the dark grass, its lifeless and twisted body contrasting with the vitality of the dogs. In the background, a dense undergrowth of trees with dark and golden foliage creates an atmosphere of secret woods, illuminated by a low light that highlights the whiteness of the dogs’ coats.

The artist shows here a remarkable science of movement and canine anatomy. His vigorous technique of oil painting makes it possible to render with incredible strength the muscular tension of the hunting dogs, the silky texture of their coats, and the plant materiality of the undergrowth, asserting his realist genius.
