Painted in 1948, “Interior with Egyptian Curtain” is a work from Matisse’s final period of painting, just before the cut-outs. The canvas is dominated by the striking contrast between the window, bursting with light and filled with the palms of an outside tree, and the dark interior structured by the curtain with geometric patterns. The still life of pomegranates in the foreground adds an organic and colorful touch. It is a meditation on light, shadow, and pattern.
