Interior Woman at the Window by Gustave Caillebotte

A melancholic painting where the art explores the border between private space and the city

This superb oil painting, executed with immense finesse by Gustave Caillebotte, is entitled “Interior Woman at the Window”. This scene of a Parisian interior masterfully illustrates the theme of shared solitude and silence within the bourgeois couple of the late nineteenth century. The painting combines domestic intimacy and openness to the outside world, characteristic of the artist’s realistic masterpieces. The work stands as a fascinating psychological and social study of Paris at the time.

On the left, an elegant woman in a black dress stands from behind in front of a large window open to the street. She looks through the balcony balustrade, framed by white lace curtains and heavy dark blue draperies. On the right, a bearded man in a dark suit reads a newspaper, sitting comfortably in his armchair. Outside, on the other side of the street, a Haussmann building can be distinguished, bearing a bright yellow sign with capital letters “NT RBU”. The soft outside light crosses the sheers, illuminating the female silhouette and sculpting the space. The asymmetrical composition reinforces the feeling of intimate solitude separating the couple.

Gustave Caillebotte deploys here all the virtuosity of his oil technique by masterfully playing on the transparences of lace. His genius is expressed both in the management of the dimmed light and in the rigor of a geometric composition. He asserts himself as an outstanding observer of urban modernity and intimate unspoken feelings.
